In spite of the pounding their industry has taken from the COVID-19 pandemic and the state's regulations aimed at curtailing it, a brewer, a chef and a barbecue grill-master are teaming up to feed their colleagues in need.
On Saturday, Batch Brewing Co. in Corktown will host a pay-what-you-can pig and vegetable roast for folks financially impacted by the latest round of state-mandated COVID-19 restrictions, which include a three-week ban on indoor dining and bar service.
"When you hear that the service industry is suffering, you need to realize that it's a lot
more than proprietors struggling to pay their rent," Batch Brewing Company proprietor Stephen Roginson said in a news release announcing the event. "It's servers, line cooks, dishwashers, security guards, and everyone that makes a restaurant go."
The Detroit BBQ Co. and Felony Provisions are teaming up with Batch to provide food and cook at the event, which runs from noon until 6 p.m. Saturday at 1400 Porter St.
"This second shut down, while only scheduled for three weeks, feels harder than the
first one," said Felony Provisions owner Rece Hogerheide in the release. "With no federal unemployment support, the layoffs that are happening as a result of this newest COVID spike are hitting us all hard."

Though designed with the hard-hit restaurant industry in mind, Roginson said anyone in need of a meal is welcome.

"We're gonna assume people want a free meal unless they tell us they'd like to make a contribution," Roginson said.
Guests will be required to wear masks and maintain physical distance from one another while waiting in line. Limited outdoor seating will be available, but food may also be taken to go.
The Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association projects that some 250,000 people could be laid off and an additional 6,000 restaurants in the state could close by spring without additional government stimulus if the indoor dining ban is prolonged.
